Whether you need a new hobby or need to grow your resume, you can probably do it Training online.

There are so many resources available to learn new skills, like instructional videos, step-by-step guides, and online courses

(Hint: The Coaching and Life Blog is a great place to start!). Often, you can pick up your new talent for free. Ready to get started?

Here are five fun and useful skills you can learn online and some places to get started.

Playing a Musical Instrument

Have you always wanted to play the guitar? Written guides and instructional videos could have you strumming a ditty in no time.

And when you learn an instrument, you’ll not only pick up a hobby — you’ll also boost your memory, strengthen your cognition, reduce your stress and improve your mood, among other mental health benefits.

Keep in mind that if you’re serious about an instrument, there’s no replacement for in-person lessons.

Playing an instrument is as physical as it is mental, and hands-on guidance is the best way to master proper form.

Speaking a Foreign Language

Maybe you need to acquire some conversational skills before traveling to another country, you’re part of a multilingual family, or you just have a love of languages.

No matter the case, you can find the resources you need online. Duolingo is a popular app and website that gamifies language learning, and that’s only one of the countless resources and apps for learning languages.

With so many options at your fingertips, the hardest part will be picking a language and sticking with it!

IT is Go-Time

Yearning for a career change? Making a major decision like pursuing a career in IT can be daunting, but completing an IT degree program is as important to your career success as potatoes are to your Mom’s potato salad recipe.

If you need flexibility, pursuing an online IT degree with WGU allows you to learn at your own pace. That way you don’t have to skip out on other tasks, like showing up for dinner. Now go carb up on that potato salad, so you’ll have energy for learning!

Dog Training

While this might not increase your income, this skill is great to have if you own a dog or are preparing to adopt one.

You can learn about different training philosophies, read detailed guides for teaching obedience and tricks and watch videos to see how other people train their dogs.

You can also dig into pet gear to see what enhances training.

For example, an e-collar can make training easier. These collars emit a vibration or beeping sound to get a dog to respond.

However, keep in mind that at-home training can’t always replace the expertise of a professional trainer, especially if your dog has significant behavioral issues.

Be Prepared or Pay

While many of us turn to our computers when it comes to learning a new skill, more often than not we rely on our phones.

If you find yourself falling into a rabbit hole of apps or sites via your mobile device, you’re liable to use up your data if you’re not paying close attention.

If you plan to use your phone frequently, your best bet is to upgrade to a larger data plan that can accommodate your usage.

Of course, the same holds true if you’re using your phone as a hotspot. Long story short: be sure to have enough data so you can #learneverything.

Don’t wait for a reason to start learning something new.

Even if you’re not striving for a promotion or gaining a practical skill, your brain benefits from learning. With so many great resources at your fingertips, there’s no reason not to pick up a new skill or two.
