Week 28 of 52   Values Coaching Program   CoachingAndLife
Spirituality.
The connection to something larger than your individual concerns.

Not religion, not doctrine. The genuine experience of being part of something beyond yourself — a sense of meaning, of connection, of something that holds when everything practical has fallen away.

Spirituality — CoachingAndLife 52 Ways

"Spirituality is what remains when you strip away the noise and ask: what is this life actually for?"   CoachingAndLife   52 Ways Program

Working through a value honestly, seeing where it is genuinely missing and mapping what to do about it, is hard to do entirely alone. That is part of why CoachingAndLife exists. We are built on the idea that people move further together than they do in isolation, with sharper thinking, honest reflection, and real support close by when it is needed. You do not have to work this one out by yourself.

Opening reflection
When do you feel most connected to something larger than your immediate concerns — and how often does that happen?

Spirituality is the broadest value in this program because it means something different to every person who holds it. For some it is rooted in religious practice. For others it is found in nature, in music, in the experience of deep human connection, in the pursuit of meaning through work or service. What these varied forms have in common is the movement of attention beyond the self — the temporary release from the small, urgent concerns of daily life into something that feels more real.

The function of Spirituality in a life is not comfort, though it often brings comfort. It is perspective. The person with a developed spiritual life — whatever form that takes — has access to a view that sits above their immediate circumstances. That view does not make difficulties disappear. It makes them proportionate. And that proportionality changes everything about how they are navigated.

Use this session when your life feels flat despite being full. When the urgency of daily demands has crowded out any sense of what is actually important. When you want to understand what Spirituality means in your specific life — not the institutional version, the personal one.

"The person who has a living connection to something larger than themselves does not handle difficulty differently from anyone else. They handle it from a different place, and that is everything." CoachingAndLife   52 Ways Program   © Berit Ladefoged

How this value shows up in real life
Spirituality, seen in the moments that matter most.
In daily life   Spirituality as perspective
The person who takes the long view

When something goes wrong — a failure, a disappointment, a loss — they feel it fully. And then they place it in a larger context. Not to diminish it but to understand it. That capacity to hold difficulty within a larger frame is one of the most stabilising resources a person can have.

In relationship   Spirituality as presence
The person who treats people as though they matter deeply

Not as a performance of niceness but as a genuine orientation — the sense that every person they meet is carrying something real and deserves genuine attention. That quality of presence, which is essentially spiritual, is felt immediately by everyone it touches.

When it is missing   The flat urgency
The person for whom everything is equally urgent and nothing is meaningful

They are busy, productive, efficient. Every task gets done. But there is a persistent flatness — a sense that the work is not adding up to anything, that the days are full of activity and empty of meaning. The absence of Spirituality is not dramatic. It is a quiet grey that settles over everything.

How we misread each other
Spirituality, seen differently depending on where you are standing.
A spiritual person is not practical.

To someone who values concrete results and pragmatic action, a person who spends time in reflection, who does not treat everything as equally urgent, who refers to meaning and purpose as guides for decision-making, can look impractical. But the person with a developed spiritual life is often the most practically effective — because they know what is worth their best effort and what is not.

The always-busy person looks alive.

To someone who values depth and meaning, a person who fills every moment with activity, who has no quiet, who never pauses to examine what any of it is for, can look engaged and capable. But activity without any orientation toward meaning is not aliveness — it is the avoidance of the most important questions a life can ask.

What Spirituality actually is.

It is whatever practice or orientation connects you to something larger than your immediate concerns — something that provides perspective, meaning, and the experience of being part of something real. The form is less important than the function: does it produce that perspective? Does it reconnect you to what matters when the noise of daily life has drowned it out?

The 5 lenses   Spirituality
Five ways to look at one value. Work through all five, and write your answers in your workbook as you go.
Lens 1   Meaning
What does Spirituality actually mean to you right now?

Think about the last time this value was fully present in your life. What did it feel like and what did it make possible? Now think about where it is absent today. Write down the difference between those two states as specifically as you can.

Lens 2   Expression
Where does your spirituality show up and where do you bury it?

When does this value show up in you naturally and without effort? When do you suppress it because it feels unsafe or too much? Notice the gap between those two answers. That gap is where this week’s work lives.

Lens 3   Purpose
Why does Spirituality matter in your life specifically right now?

If this value were fully alive in you, what would change at work? What would change at home? What decision that you have been avoiding would suddenly become clear? Be specific. Generalities do not move anything.

Lens 4   What it unlocks
What becomes possible when Spirituality is fully alive in you?

This value is not an end in itself. It is a door. When you live it fully, what does it open? What relationships become easier? What version of yourself shows up that is not yet fully present?

Lens 5   What happens without it
What does the absence of Spirituality cost you in concrete terms?

Do not soften this. Where in your life right now is the absence of this value creating friction, distance, or stagnation? Name it precisely. The clearer you are about the cost, the more motivated you will be to do the actual work this week.

Critical situation   What to look for
Spirituality — recognize it under real pressure.

Watch for this: a difficulty lands and your first response is to react at the same scale as the emotion. Real Spirituality is the pause that places the difficulty inside something larger, before you respond to it.
