Week 4 of 52   Values Coaching Program   CoachingAndLife
Mindfulness.
The practice of being where you actually are.

Not a meditation technique. The daily discipline of noticing what is actually happening, in your body, in your relationships, in your work, instead of operating on automatic.

This session takes 20 to 30 minutes   Find a quiet space   No right answers

Mindfulness, CoachingAndLife 52 Ways

"The most useful thing you can give any moment is your full attention. That is what Mindfulness actually is."   CoachingAndLife   52 Ways Program

Working through a value honestly, seeing where it is genuinely missing and mapping what to do about it, is hard to do entirely alone. That is part of why CoachingAndLife exists. We are built on the idea that people move further together than they do in isolation, with sharper thinking, honest reflection, and real support close by when it is needed. You do not have to work this one out by yourself.

Opening reflection
When did you last do something and be fully there for it, not planning, not reviewing, not managing, just present?

Mindfulness has been packaged as something you do for ten minutes in the morning with an app. That version is fine as a starting point. But the real practice is wider and harder. It is the habit of noticing where your attention actually is, versus where you wish it were, versus where the moment you are in actually needs it.

Most people live two or three steps ahead of themselves. They are in a meeting and thinking about the next meeting. They are with their children and composing an email in their head. They are in a conversation and preparing their response rather than hearing what is being said. That gap between presence and absence has a real cost: in relationships, in decision quality, in the feeling that time is moving too fast.

Use this session when you feel like you are producing but not living. When you cannot remember the last time something felt fully real. When your days are full and somehow still feel hollow.

"Presence is not the absence of thought. It is the presence of attention, deliberately placed on what is actually here, not on what was or what might be." CoachingAndLife   52 Ways Program   © Berit Ladefoged

How this value shows up in real life
Mindfulness, seen in the moments that matter most.
At work   Mindfulness in use
The manager who actually listens

In meetings, they are not preparing their next point while someone speaks. They hear the full thing, sit with it, and then respond. That small difference, genuine listening versus parallel thinking, changes every dynamic in a team.

At home   Mindfulness as presence
The parent who puts the phone face down

Not as a rule, but because they have decided that this ten minutes with their child is actually this ten minutes with their child. The child feels the difference between being with a person and being near a person who is somewhere else.

When it is missing   Drift
The person who is never quite here

They are always available and somehow never fully present. Conversations feel thin. Moments pass without landing. They are managing their life rather than living it, and they have a sense, usually late at night, that something important is passing them by.

How we misread each other
Mindfulness, seen differently depending on where you are standing.
A mindful person looks slow.

To someone who values speed and output, a person who pauses, who considers before responding, who moves with attention rather than urgency, can look inefficient. But the person who is fully present makes fewer costly mistakes and requires less correction than the person who is everywhere at once.

The fast-moving person looks sharp.

To someone who values calm and deliberateness, a person who is always responding, always in motion, always producing, can feel energising to be around. But speed that is not grounded in attention is often just noise: high activity that moves in many directions and arrives nowhere.

What Mindfulness actually requires.

It requires the willingness to be with what is actually here, even when what is here is uncomfortable. The practice is not about achieving calm. It is about honest attention. To the conversation you are in. To the feeling in your body. To the moment that is actually happening.

The 5 lenses   Mindfulness
Five ways to look at one value. Work through all five, and write your answers in your workbook as you go.
Lens 1   Meaning
What does Mindfulness actually mean to you right now?

Think about the last time this value was fully present in your life. What did it feel like and what did it make possible? Now think about where it is absent today. Write down the difference between those two states as specifically as you can.

Lens 2   Expression
Where does your mindfulness show up and where do you bury it?

When does this value show up in you naturally and without effort? When do you suppress it because it feels unsafe or too much? Notice the gap between those two answers. That gap is where this week’s work lives.

Lens 3   Purpose
Why does Mindfulness matter in your life specifically right now?

If this value were fully alive in you, what would change at work? What would change at home? What decision that you have been avoiding would suddenly become clear? Be specific. Generalities do not move anything.

Lens 4   What it unlocks
What becomes possible when Mindfulness is fully alive in you?

This value is not an end in itself. It is a door. When you live it fully, what does it open? What relationships become easier? What version of yourself shows up that is not yet fully present?

Lens 5   What happens without it
What does the absence of Mindfulness cost you in concrete terms?

Do not soften this. Where in your life right now is the absence of this value creating friction, distance, or stagnation? Name it precisely. The clearer you are about the cost, the more motivated you will be to do the actual work this week.

Critical situation   What to look for
Mindfulness — recognize it under real pressure.

Watch for this: something triggers you hard and fast, and there is a split second before you react. Real Mindfulness lives in that split second, the pause between the trigger and the response, where you actually get to choose.

AI Coaching Session   Week 4   Mindfulness   © CoachingAndLife
Your personal coaching conversation starts here.

This is a guided conversation, not a quiz. The AI will open warmly, ask you real questions, and follow your answers. There are no right responses. Speak from where you actually are today, not from who you think you should be. The conversation will take 10 to 20 minutes and it will go at your pace.
